Relic in the making, with Peter Kovacsy

As Melbourne Design Week 2026 approaches, here’s a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Relic, our latest limited edition work, set to make its Australian debut at our MDW event, ‘Open Studio’, in May.

Captured in Pemberton, Western Australia, these moments follow glass artist Peter Kovacsy as he handcrafts four of just ten Relic Table Lamps, each piece shaped through a meticulous, hands-on process.

Following a complex 15-day firing and annealing schedule, the finishing process begins. Each of the four clear crystal forms weighs close to 16kg and is cast within a mould exceeding 45kg. In total, the thermal mass balanced within the kiln throughout the firing process reaches well over 250kg. An intricate orchestration requiring precision, patience, and deep material understanding.

Defined by materiality and precise geometry, Relic reflects an ongoing exploration of form, finish and permanence, revealed here in its earliest stages before its debut.
