Rosanna Ceravolo were tasked with updating and modernising the 2 bedroom art deco apartment in Melbourne’s inner city suburb of South Yarra. The South Yarra Apartment had been the client’s family for 30 years. It was clear that this place was special beyond just being an investment property, and their celebratory approach to the renovation reflects this.
The existing space had ample access to natural light and lovely internal details and trims. A light touch was adopted so as not to detract from the existing features.
A longing for ceremony underpins the design approach to this petite space. A considered finishes palette was used to denote this, where colour has been used sparingly but considerately to create a sense of occasion to specific zones.
Creating a sense of arrival to the entry was important – it’s such a luxury to have a generous entryway in a small apartment. It was an important aspect to maintain and celebrate, so Rosanna created a heightened sense of enclosure and utilised colour blocking to the walls and floor as a way to demarcate the entry vestibule.
The kitchen design references a traditional European kitchen – tight but packed with function and a space for everyone. Rosanna and her team kept the kitchen joinery simple and proportionate in scale. Since the kitchen and dining zones were incorporated into a very small area, integrated appliances were utilised to ensure the utilitarian aspects of the kitchen did not visually overwhelm the space. They also created bespoke built in seating and a central island bench which serves a dual function of providing additional kitchen prep space as well as a place to gather. The team at Rosanna Ceravolo were very much drawn to the idea of creating a place for ritual and ceremony even within the confines of a small kitchen and felt that this should be celebrated.
A black custom metal shelving unit references the steel plate art deco balustrading to the apartment’s exterior and provides a home for all the daily items that need not be hidden away – TV, books, record player and objects – items which form part of the tapestry of the interior.
